No new jail

Our recent campaign against Sheriff Labat's proposal to construct a $2 billion jail in Atlanta represents a significant victory for our community and a step forward in the fight against over-incarceration. Through strategic advocacy and collaboration, we were able to influence decision-makers and achieve meaningful outcomes that reflect our commitment to justice and rehabilitation.

Key Achievements

  • Testimony at Commissioners and Legislative Meetings:

    • Our dedicated members and allies testified at numerous commissioners' meetings and legislative sessions. These testimonies highlighted the detrimental effects of over-incarceration and underscored the urgent need for alternative solutions.

  • Plan to Close Atlanta City Detention Center:

    • We proposed a comprehensive plan to close the Atlanta City Detention Center, aiming to redirect resources towards more humane and effective approaches. While the facility remains open, we secured a crucial concession that marks a significant shift in policy and practice.

  • Establishment of Diversion and Crisis Centers:

    • Our advocacy efforts culminated in the allocation of two floors of the Atlanta City Detention Center for a Diversion Center. This center is designed to provide necessary support and services to individuals, diverting them from the criminal justice system and addressing root causes of criminal behavior.

Additionally, our campaign led to the creation of a Crisis Center, which will offer critical intervention and support for individuals experiencing mental health crises. This initiative reflects our commitment to treating mental health issues with the care and attention they deserve, rather than defaulting to incarceration.

What's next

While we celebrate these victories, our work is far from over. We remain dedicated to closing the Atlanta City Detention Center entirely and continuing to push for reforms that prioritize rehabilitation and support over incarceration. The establishment of the Diversion and Crisis Centers is a monumental step, but we must continue to advocate for policies that address the root causes of crime and provide individuals with the resources they need to thrive.

This campaign has demonstrated the power of community advocacy and the possibility of effecting meaningful change. We are proud of what we have accomplished and are committed to building on this momentum to create a more just and equitable society.
