Deshanier King,
Communications Organizer

Pronouns: They/Them

Deshaneir King is the Communications Organizer at Women on the Rise, leveraging their talents as an interdisciplinary artist and passionate community organizer. Deshaneir integrates project management, film, photography, and grassroots organizing to drive transformative social movements. Their work bridges the gap between art and advocacy, amplifying marginalized voices and mobilizing communities for collective action and lasting change.

Deshaneir King found their passion for art and advocacy while studying at Middle Georgia State University in Macon, Georgia. During this time, they were exposed to art history, gender studies, and film theory, which deeply radicalized them. Inspired by the transformative power of art to resist oppression and convey stories of resistance, Deshaneir pursued a degree in New Media and Communications with a certificate in Film Production.

After college, Deshaneir embarked on a career as a photographer and filmmaker, freelancing for various organizations, including Women on the Rise. In 2022, they attended The Formerly Incarcerated, Convicted People & Families Movement (FICPFM) conference to interview impacted families, a significant moment three years after their father's release from prison and exoneration of a wrongful conviction. This experience ignited Deshaneir's passion for using their skills to change the narrative about justice-impacted individuals.

Now, as the full-time Communications Organizer at Women on the Rise, Deshaneir continues to reimagine narratives, working to highlight the stories of those often overlooked and marginalized. They remain committed to using their artistic and organizational skills to foster understanding, empathy, and systemic change in their community and beyond.
